Thank you so much!! This is a wonderful list. I left in the comments, because I found them helpful. I tried to eliminate duplications that did not include any new comments. Enjoy!! --=20 Laura Spota, Library Media Specialist Edgewood School (K-5) Scarsdale, New York lspota@scarsdaleschools.k12.ny.us ****** I love to read "All About Sam" by Lowry aloud to my third grades because they can't help but giggle through the book. If you don't have time to read the whole book, read the first chapter sometime to the class--they'll want to read the rest themselves. There are several sequels "Atta Boy Sam" and "See you Later, Sam" (not sure that's right) "Sideways Stories from Wayside School" by Louis Sachar. I also like most o= f the books by Betsey Duffey, especially "The Gadget War" or any her "Cody" books. All of these made both boys and girlslaugh! My children always liked books by Barbara Park when they were in third grade--Skinnybones, or Kid in the Red Jacket, or Operation Dump the Chump. help! I'm trapped in the presidents body, my sisters body, the lunch ladys body, etc by Todd Strasser "The Prince of the Pond" by Donna JoNapoli. Have you tried the Sam books by Lois Lowry? How about Coville's JENNIFER MURDLEY'S TOAD? it's very funny. I have read All About Sam to third graders for years and I almost always get belly laughs from even the most reluctant students. Even the teachers, who have heard it over and over laugh out loud. It is good. I've always thought that "Be a Perfect Person in Just Three Days" by Stephe= n Manes was very funny. Any of the Munsch books, Animals Should Definitely NOT Wear Clothing, Farmer Duck by Waddell. . . hope it helps. One of the BEST books that would be at grade level for them would be The Pagemaster. You might try, The Classroom at the End of the Hall. Can't remember the author right now. It's an easy chapter book and nice because each chapter is self contained. I read it to my 3rd/4th graders last year and they loved it! I've read "Jennifer Murdley's Toad" to second and third graders, and they laugh hysterically. I really like the "Show & Tell War" by Smith (The Adam Joshua stores) - especially the chapter about the Library & the Superman book. The Mrs. PiggleWiggle books are also fun. The Junie B. Jones series, by Barbara Park -- sure-fire funny books that ar= e loved by girls (actually, boys like them just as much). These books are terrific read-alouds. I'm reading a book called Tooter Pepperday to my third grades. It's by Jerry Spinelli and is about a family that moves to a farm where everyone except Tooter is happy. She hates everything including the poop she continues to step in. It's pretty silly, but the kids really do laugh out loud. Hope this helps. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is one of the funniest books I have ever read. I read it to classes as a teacher and as a librarian, I recommend it highly to my students. The sequel is also funny--The Best/Worst School Year Ever Are your kids jaded or what? Have you tried The time warp trio by John Sciesczka? I would just start reading and not give them a choice. They will always object just to be cool. Kids enjoy hearing stories. JUST READ!! Frindle by Clements I am a third grade teacher and I have found a couple of funny ones- Junie B. Jones Series- Barbara Park (esp.- Junie B. Jones is Not a Crook) Wayside School series - Louis Sachar These books of short stories can be pretty nonsensical and funny My Rotten Red Headed Older Brother - Patricia Polacco Amelia's Notebook series- Marissa Moss (My whole class loved the first one- great for journal writing, too- Lots and lots of silly stuff!) When I was their age Ellen Tebbits by Cleary made me laugh aloud. What's wrong with Beverly Cleary books? Ramona always makes me laugh. Try _ Joey Pigza Swallowed his Key_ and _Joey Pigza Loses Control_= . These books are funny but deep with meaning about how it feels to be a hyperactive kid. Of course, read the books yourself first. I had thoughts that children all around the U.S. would be attempting to swallow their own keys. Try _Pete's A Pizza_(picture book), the Amber Brown series or Junie B. Jones. Good luck. Hank the Cowdog books by Erickson Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing by Judy Blume My kids love the "Fudge" books by Judy Blume: Superfudge, Fudgamania, Tale= s of a Fourth Grade Nothing. Our kids love the TIme Warp Trio especially Summer Reading is killing me. Matilda =AD Dahl I like the Adam Joshua series by Janice Lee Smith. I read her book entitled The turkey's side of it this time of year as it coincides with our 3rd graders getting ready for their holiday program. Girls and boys roll on the floor laughing as I read it aloud during library classes. Usually spread it over 3 30-minute classes because discussion of plot, etc. is also done before beginning new chapters. My favorite laugh out loud books for my third graders are Louis Sachar' Sideways Stories from Wayside School and Wayside School is falling Down. The Junie B Jones series is supposedly funny, but I have not tried them wit= h my class. When I read them I thought they were so so. ****** My Middle School kids (6th and 7th graders) loved the opening chapter to Th= e Watson's Go to Birmingham when Kenny, (so in love with himself) gets stuck to the outside mirror of the car (kissing himself). What makes it laugh ou= t loud funny is the WAY in which it is read out loud. You have to imitate Byron's predicament as if you were stuck to the mirror! It's a hoot! FIFTH graders love "The Great Mouse Plot" chapter in Boy, by Roald Dahl. Mrs. Pratchett's "malignant pig eyes" and the mixed feelings the boys had for candy vs this mean old woman is delicious. Again, read out loud funny comes with the way this one is presented. Bill Britton's Wish Giver writes a "be careful for what you wish, it may just come true" story. The main character is a brat, loud mouth, disrespectful to her mother and others, YET wants to be popular and NOTICED= . When she wishes upon a card the Wish Giver sold her at the fair ...every time she opens her mouth (to be mean) she croaks like a frog. DOES SHE GET NOTICED???? These work for me (grades5-8) It may work as read alouds for you. ****** =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
