I've had a hard time coming up with this answer. When a student uses
a photo from a book to illustrate a paper, or for a project, what format
should she use for citing the photograph? In the MLA Handbok they
show how to cite a photograph in a museum or in a collection; but
theycon't cover when a photo is just in a book or on the Internet,
without any authorship mentioned.

If following MLA Bib generally, how would be the following citation
be listed, found at a hypothetical website address of <www.xxx.zzz>?
(photo of a Nigerian house)

=A9 1997 National Geographic Society. All rights reserved.
                                                       Photograph by Steve=
 McCurry

AND if it says All rights reserved, as it does, does that mean the
student can not use it in her project?
---

What about the situation where there is a random illustration in a
book, no credit given, no caption. Say it's another Nigerian House,
found in the book Africa by Jonas Smith, pub. by Hobbit Pub. Co, in
Hobbiton, 1999. How would this illustration be properly cited?

In the past, our student have lavishly illustrated their projects with
copies of photos found all over the place. Now we're being more
standard in our assertion that students cite all sources--but I don't
know what to do with these photos!

Thanks!
