I had a brainstorm on Saturday and decided to be The Sorting Hat. With a bit
of help from some friends...I did it! We made a large, 5 ft. tall hat out of
chicken wire, attached a 'bill-less baseball cap' inside for me to wear and
keep the real hat on. I covered it with some great purple and gold Christmas
fabric (!) and had a slit covered with chiffon so I could see out, but
others couldn't see in. It was a HIT. I copied off the Sorting Hat song from
Sorcerer's Stone and carried a battery-operated tape recorder to play it.
For some classes I only played the first stanza; for others, all of it. I
made classroom visits during the afternoon to the 3rd and 4th grades. Some
figured out who I was, but I never spoke. (I also got of lot of wrong
guesses...I imagine the kids will be delighted to see the HAT in the library
the next few days...it will become a semi-permanent addition.) I really got
1 teacher whose kids were out of the room! The rest of the time I was Harry
Potter so I never looked out of 'dress-up'! Quite a day!
