Dear Lorna,
We have found that the easiest way to keep student barcodes is this.

Each student is assigned a barcode and this is attached to a small card
(the size of a photography slide) and their name is printed on underneath.
We then purchased plastic sheets designed to hold slides from a photography
store and then each card is just popped into its own pocket in alphabetical
order of each class. New arrivals just go into the unused pockets at the
end. If a student leaves , their card is pulled out, name is removed,
computer records adjusted and the number reassigned.

The sheets are then kept in a ring binder at the circ desk and the kids
just find their class sheet and their own name and scan it. They are very
quick.

At the end of the year, many of our students stay in the same group, so it
is just a matter of changing the slide with the teacher's name and making a
few adjustments. No one has to remember anything except their own name.

I hope this is clear - if I have used expressions that are not familiar to
you , like 'photography slide', could someone who knows what I am talking
about please translate.

Cheers
Barbara
