I have a teacher who would like suggestions on a novel for his 9th grade
history classes. He would prefer one that spans several decades
(1865+), or involves historic events. It would need to be easy enough
for 9th graders of average reading ability. He would also like a novel
for his AVID classes in which the main character(s) overcome adversity
through their own hard work. (Our AVID classes take average ability
students who would not otherwise be on the college track and put them in
college-prep courses. They attend an AVID class each day where they
learn study skills, get organized, and have tutors from the community to
help them with their assignments.) I am drawing a blank. Any
suggestions?

Thanks,

Becky
