Well, I've learned lots of interesting facts since posting my naive question (where might I find battery-operated lava lamps): 1. Wes Craven, the inventor of the Lava Lamp, died recently, after a long and very-varied career. 2. There are MANY websites devoted to Lava-lamp fans and afficianados. 3. What I described -- multicolored small bubbles in constant motion -- is not technically a lava lamp, but rather a *motion* lamp. 4. If heat is required to make the contents "move", then the lamp will: a) require more energy than most batteries can provide, and b) will get HOT to the touch, so it should not be easily accessible to students. 5. Spenser's gifts (www.spensers.com) has several varieties of lamps that would meet my purpose (e.g. "here is your brain... on thinking"). and finally: 6. As always, LM_netters are splendiferous sources of arcane (or inane?) information!
