Hello to LM_NET list members, I have been lurking on the list, making one or two comments, since May. This list is wonderful! I did obtain a mentor through the kindness of Diane Polizar, and am sending this request to my mentor as well. I start on Tuesday as a new Educational Media Specialist at a Middle School, grades 6, 7, and 8. I worked last year as a teacher in the library in an Elementary School, grades 3, 4, and 5, where they could find no LMS. I started courses to obtain the LMS certification, but due to a temporary contract could not be requested back until after a search for a LMS. I was hired in June for the position at this Middle School (in a different state); the Elementary School did find a LMS for this year. I am continuing the courses for EMS certification; I start class in a new state and school on Sept. 5. For the past for 3 years there has been no EMS in the school where I will be working. They have had a library aide doing the administrative duties, assisting students coming from study halls, and assisting teachers bringing classes to use the library for research. The principal feels things have been going wonderfully with the aide in the library, but has made me feel very welcome. He suggests, strongly, that I make no changes in the system until next school year. I will proceed slowly, and cautiously. The aide said to me on Wednesday, "Well, at least you won't have to teach!" I asked for a plan book and was told I did not need one; however I politely requested and was given one to schedule the classes that will come to the library. While in the school on Friday I met one of the 8th grade English teachers and told her I would like to cooperate with any lessons she might be planning. She seemed very interested and asked, "How are you at teaching research skills?" I want to use this opportunity to make a good impression when I discuss teaching research skills to her classes. Since I have never worked in a Middle School (always in K-5), I would appreciate any suggestions you may have for the middle grades. I have looked in the archives this weekend, but would appreciate any suggestions you may have. I will post a HIT if there is interest.
