Hi.

I have been trying to conduct research for several weeks on a topic before I
asked for your help. Now I need the input of your experience.

I am a librarian in a district that includes a small changing population of
international students, who have parents who work in New York City for a year
or two. We have received a substantial grant to purchase International
Children's Literature for our two K-6 elementary schools. The goal is to find
the best of translated literature from around the world, which would include
award-winning books, classics, and one's that represent the cultures
accurately--although they do not need to be about the culture, per se. I have
started researching with the help of the International Board of Books for
Young People and their publication, Bookbird; Carl Tomlinson's book,
Children's Books from Other Countries, the archives, and similar sources. As
we are starting with Australia, I have used The Children's Literature Web
Guide lists, The Oxford Companion to Australian Children's Literature, the
OzLit site, the Well Bookstore, and information recently posted on this
listserv. Since it would be preferred to have literature with the original
dialect if it comes from Australia or Britain, I am attempting to order from
international book dealers. There were some recommendations for middle school
readers, but those suggestions are mostly too mature for my group. Can anyone
offer any other insights into this search? After Australia and New Zealand,
we will be try to locate works from Japan.

In the future, I will use the ongoing results as the basis of a graduate
course.

Thank you for your assistance, and, of course, I will post a hit.
