Mary's message about the crazy reading levels in AR reminds all of us that WE and the teachers are the professionals. WE need to set the reading levels for Reading Counts and AR. We haven't read all the books but by putting our heads together with our teachers we can make these programs work for kids. I used Reading Counts (then EBS) for 8 years--it was great but I certainly didn't turn over my professional judgment to them. Most reading levels whether done with word counts or whatever are highly inaccurate. We need to use the examples Mary pointed out with our teachers so that they can see that AR isn't set in stone and should be used in a flexible manner.
