I have received several comments on finding substitutes for the library when I am out. The principal requires all teachers to get their own substitute, regardless of the fact that the system has a computerized substitute finder. Many of the teachers spend an hour or so in the morning calling many substitutes, in spite of being ill or having sick children. I do plan to go to our union representative about this as several of you have suggested. There are two substitutes that I use who are familiar with the circulation system and can teach classes. One has substituted in the library for many years. She was the one that was supposed to keep my class on Tuesday but was sent to a class where a teacher didn't have a substitute. Our system seems to think that librarians are not instructional units anyway as we did not get the new computers to go on the network that all of the classroom teachers got, including art and music (and I do plan to go to the association on this, once the network is up and running and claim discrimination if I don't have computers by that time). This is the second year of this principal's administration, he has no children, and is hardly ever out, so he is not sympathetic to the fact that teachers do get sick, have sick children, are on jury duty, etc. I am just insulted that when I follow the guidelines and get a substitute, the principal sends the substitute to another class. I don't mind the clerk substituting if I can't get one, but if I take the time to get one, I feel that she should stay in the library. I really appreciate all of your support. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Madeline L. Buchanan, Library Media Specialist W. J.
