Thank you for the responses! --------- J. Renee Thompson Library Media Specialist Browne Academy Alexandria, VA thompson@browneacademy.org Hi there, I work in 2 K-5 buildings..a couple of years ago we had an enrichment program and invited a different guest speaker from the community to come in and tell us about their job...half-hour sessions for 3rd - 5th graders who were told ahead of time the topic and told to ask interesting questions...worked on this with some classes and explained that they could pretty much ask the same questions of all presenters and get some very interesting info. We had local people: bee keepers, TV news personalities, a county court judge who came in his robes w/ gavel,a lawyer,a young student airplane pilot, a veternarian, an optometrist, medical doctors, physical therapists, newspaper journalists and so forth. Many were parents or relatives of kids in school...we just called and asked after brainstorming a list. The theme revolved around people in our community but you could create any theme and go from there. People are usually pretty good about coming when they know it is in front of small groups and not too long. We took lots of pictures for bulletin boards and news articles in local newspapers advertising what we were doing as a school/community connection. Be sure to get guests' okay before putting pictures in newspaper. Our local history museum has traveling displays and programs as well...there must be something of that type in your area also...haven't been down that way in a while to visit friends and my sister...I did enjoy strolling through Old Alexandria though! Does this sound like what you were looking for? Good Luck! Camelia ---------------- TV folks will visit - the weatherman, the sports caster. Radio folks will visit - popular DJ's bring prizes. Have fun! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Kate Stirk, Media Specialist stirkk@annunciationacademy.org (school) Annunciation Catholic Academy, Altamonte Springs, Florida, USA stirkk@juno.com (home) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hi - You might contact your public library to see if they have a local speakers file. They might also be a possibility for a speaker - tell about their services. Is there an Audubon club? Travel guild? What about a scuba diving store? Jill Brown, LMS Nardin Academy Buffalo, NY buflib@yahoo.com --------------- I have a local storyteller, the PR person from Barnes and Noble, and the children's librarian from the local public library branch coming to my library this year to talk to the students. The PR person from B&N is coming to do storytelling for our Harvest Party in October. Hope this helps! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
