G'day,

Will I need counselling next week? This morning's newspaper is talking
about the need for athletes and volunteers to undergo counselling to cope
with the letdown after the Olympics. What about this poor Olympic junkie?

Last night belonged to nations who don't figure highly in the medal count.
The long, lithe Kenyans with their beaming smiles won two golds (and 1
silver and 1 bronze)- in the 3000m steeplechase and the 1500m race.
Morococan - Hicham El Guerrouj, favourite in the 1500m, was sandwiched
between 2 Kenyans at the finish. Someone near me commented that he'd better
wait a while before returning to Morocco.

A 17 year old Polish hammer thrower won the women's event whilst Polish
Robert Korzen........ won gold in the 50km walk (a week after winning gold
in the 20km) so we stood twice for the Polish anthem. I was annoyed and
embarrassed for Australia when the young woman did not stand for the
national anthems. My son, Cameron, pointed out that she had been knocking
back beers all night and was probably incapable of standing. Warm nights and
warm beers do not promote sobriety.

Congratulations, US, on your men's pole vaulters - they starred in the final
with Gold going to Nick Hysong over the favoured Lawrence Johnson, the poor
Aussies tied for 5th place. Marion Jones won her third medal of the games in
the long jump but had to be happy with bronze. Veteran German Heike
Drechsler took gold.

Oh, to be a gifted writer - I just don't have the words to describe the
excitement of the people in the stadium last night and the friendly crowd on
the train home who were comparing notes about the events they had witnessed.

We were sitting near a guy from Salt Lake City last night - I mentioned that
I'd visited his city to see the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and commented that
it was an attractive environment. I was so proud when he told me that he'd
lived in many countries during his time in the US army and that Sydney was
his favourite city in the world.

All events are finals now - Cameroon has just beaten Spain in a playoff
after extra time in Football(Soccer) - can't wait to witness the 9 athletics
finals I'll see tonight from Row 61!

In a world first Australia Post is being entrepreneurial/innovative by
producing a stamp each time an Australian team or individual wins a gold
medal. Modern Technology provides the wherewithall for stamps to be on sale
at 12 noon the day after a medal is won. I'm just about to email my
husband's order for philatelic items off to Australia Post.

Until Monday when I send the last post
