I teach! Classes on critical sources, classes on using and evaluating what
you find on the internet, classes on the Holocaust, medieval chivalry,
Renaissance poetry, Shakespearian theatrical conventions, World War I,
Steinbeck's influence on American writers, and on and on....
I answer countless reference questions for both staff and students, day in
and day out.
I create displays (at least one a month) in the library.
I do staff in-services for both the district and county.
I read catalogs and reviews, and order books from that inforamtion.
I balance budgets (the library draws funding from three sources).
I keep accurate records of all we do and spend.
I enforce discipline.
I supervise students before and after school.
I create and send out overdue notices for those who owe books.
I come in on weekends to catalog because there just isn't enough time
during the day and my family wants to see me at night (sometimes).

Shall I go on? <G>

It's hard to keep a straigh face when someone makes a comment like this. A
few years ago, I had a staff member who made such comments more than once,
to more than one person. I confronted this person and offered to pay for
the person's substitue for the day so they could shadow me. To my
astonishment, she accepted. She was stunned at the end of that day, not to
mention exhausted. She became one of the library's strongest supporters
after her 'experience'. You might also consider a one period shadowing by
an administrator...that usually shuts them up..they have NO staying power!
<G>

Good luck!
