THANKS TO ALL!! I just purchased Terrible Things by Eve Bunting at the request of our 5th grade teacher who teaches about the holocaust. Also have Butterfly by Polacco, Ann Frank and Number on my grandfather's arm by Adler. @@@@@@ David Adler has a book about Anne Frank: A Picture Book of Anne Frank thta I found at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. It is tastefully done for the younger kids. Right now I am reading The Devil's Arithmetic by Jane Yolen, which would be great for you older students (4th -6th). There is also a video for the Yolen book which is pretty true to the story and would be good for the older students as well. @@@@@@@ Teaching Holocaust Literature by Samuel Totten (Editor) $19.99 at Amazon. 2)United States Holocaust Memorial Museum http://www.ushmm.org/ 3) Cybrary of the Holocaust http://www.remember.org 4)Holocaust Teacher Resource Center http://www.holocaust-trc.org 5) http://www.mindspring.com/~cleanccl/index.html Holocaust Education For Children Thse sites have all recommended bibliographies. @@@@@@ There are several new books about the Holocaust listed in the CCCBC Choices (annual list of excellent books for school libraries). I can't recall any of them offhand but they may have the list on their Web site (it's a great book they publich every year, I'm sure there would be some other holocausts books published in earlier years too). http://www.education.wisc.edu/ccbc/ @@@@@@ Check out Number the Stars by Lowry and The Butterfly by Patricia Polacco @@@@@ The Florida Holocaust Museum has a program called traveling trunks which include grade appropriate materials for use on the holocaust and related themes. I have currently borrowed the 1st and 2nd grade trunk which includes the videos Different and the Same with pictures book that go with each of the 10 videos. It also includes the teacher training manual. If you send me a fax # I will fax you the list of materials included in the trunk.. Here in Fl you can borrow the trunks for up to 6 weeks and the only cost is the shipping. Maybe they would lend to another state oor maybe a museum near you has the same program. I have not looked at the individual materials in each trunk but the 1st-2nd is fantastic! The museum has a web site www.flholocaustmuseum.org. They might be willing to send you a list of the contents of the other trunks. They go through 12th grade. @@@@@@ http://www.state.nj.us/njded/holocaust/curriculum/currlist.htm The Little Riders by Margarita Shemin "Number the Stars" by Lois Lowry Daniel's Story by Carol Matas Jacob's Rescue by Malka Drucker When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr Devil's Arithmetic by Jane Yolen Child of the Warsaw Ghetto - Adler - picture book, could be used with grades 2/3 - 6 The Butterfly - Polacco Darkness over Denmark, the Danish resistance and the rescue of the Jews - Levine (grades 5-6 and up) A Place to Hide, true stories of Holocaust rescues - Pettit The Holocaust Heroes - Fremon (grades 4-6 and up) Parallel Journeys - GREAT for seeing both sides of the Holcaust (for grades 5-6 and up) Anne Frank, Beyond the Diary : A photographic remembrance - Van der Rol Anne Frank - Tames (with lots of photos, maps, diagrams of the secret annex, etc.) (Maybe for as young as 3rd grade and up) ******** most large cities have a Holocaust resource center where schools can get free information and even schedule speakers to come to the school. @@@@@@ Bishop Twenty and Ten Kerr When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit Laird Shadow of the Wall Lowry Number the Stars Matas Daniel's Story Morpurgo Waiting for Anya Nolan If I Should Die Before I Wake Orgel The Devil in Vienna Orlev The Island on Bird Street The Lady With the Hat Ossowski Star Without a Sky Schnur The Shadow Children Van Stockum The Borrowed House Vos Dancing on the Bridge of Avignon Hide and Seek I Never Saw Another Butterfly (book of poetry) The Upstairs Room Number the Stars The Diary of Ann Frank I Never Saw Another Butterfly When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit Daniel's Story Learning About . . .The Holocaust: Literature and Other Resources for Young People" by Elaine C.
