Once again, I thank you for your help! Here is my original target followed by the responses I received. Target: I have a fifth-grade teacher who has asked me to purchase some videos to accompany good read-alouds (She would read the book to the class and then they would watch the video as a culminating activity). I asked her for any specific titles, but she couldn't give me any. So I am asking for your help. Can you suggest some good 5th grade read-alouds for which there are some well-made video adaptations? Thanks for your suggestions! How about some of the Roald Dahls - Matilda, The Witches Or Babe based on The sheep-pig by Dick King-Smith From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, has a wonderful video adaptation called "The Hideaways", Bridge to Terribithia has a great video, an easier read is "How to be a Perfect Person in Just Three Days" Homecoming, Ellen Foster, Johnny Tremaine, My fifth grade "Book and Film Club" adores The Whipping Boy (The film is called "Prince Brat and the Whipping Boy," Sign of the Beaver, and From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler (Be sure NOT to get the film with Ingrid Bergman. It's not a good rendition. You want the one with Lauren Bacall.). The books are great, and the movies are quite good but give a lot to talk about, Venn diagram, etc. Our 5th grade teachers like the following books/videos: Hatchet (video is called "A cry in the wilderness" - I think) Best Christmas Pageant Ever (yes, we can still celebrate holidays) Homer Price (we have 2 of the chapters on one video) The Best Bad Thing Some titles are the following: James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, A Cry in the Wilderness is the video of the book Hatchet, Nightjohn and Where the Red Fern Grows. Charlotte's Web Stuart Little Two Minute Werewolf (ABC Afterschool special on video) Little House on the Prairie (TV show) Pippi Longstocking (older movie) Little Princess, Heidi (Shirley Temple movies) How about Shiloh or Matilda? I believe there may be a movie adaptation of From the Files of Basil E. Frankweiler to go with the great book as well.... How about Jacob Have I loved. HOw about the Winter of the Red Snow by Scholastic or any of the other of the Dear America books ? Matilda by Dahl Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Dahl From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by Konigsberg Our fifth grade does the book and video of Sign of the Beaver. Also good, tho. our fourth grade does it, is "From the Mixed Up Files...".
