Book Title?

Dear LM_NET Friends,

A grandmother who volunteers at my school asked me about a book she has =
been wondering about since she was in the 4th grade in 1951. Her teacher =
was reading it aloud when the school year ended, and she would still =
like to find out the ending. The description sounded a little like =
HEIDI. Here is what she could remember:

A boy is sent up into the mountains to live with his grandfather whom he =
had never met. A dog or wolf befriends the boy because he couldn't get =
along with the grandfather. Their relationship improves and near the end =
of the story, the mother wants him back. It is up to the boy to decide.
