New York State Budget

To all friends of education and libraries:

I am posting this information because the libraries and school of New York
are in dire straights.

Each year the budget needs to be passed by April 1st and some years it has
not been until July.  This leaves the districts hanging every year wondering
if there is going to operate the schools in New York State.
It also distributes the Federal funds to the schools.

This year the Senate and House of New York State has recessed for the summer
without passing a state budget - so the schools will received no aide until
one is passed.  This is a disgrace to all who care about kids.

I am asking New York Librarians to call your local representatives and shame
them for allowing this to happen and ask them to go back to work and do
something about this now.

I am asking others from across the country to call Governor Pataki in Albany
and leave a message telling what state you are from and how disgusting this
is.  Emails help but won't make as much of a difference as calling will.

Our state aide money is at risk as well as federal aide to libraries.
Please help us.
