Riptide by Francis Ward Weller does it for me. At the end of the book it has the obituary for the real Riptide. The dog reminds me so much of a Flat Coated Retriever that we had. Freedom loved the ocean--his whole body would start to quiver when he smelled the ocean. He looked like a seal in the water, he would dive through the waves, and then ride them back in. The last time I read the book to a class, the tears were streaming down my face. My principal laughs at me, because he knows I can't read sad dog stories--of course he can't either!
