Hi Stephanie, I know that there are some really good reasons for using filters within our school system. I am a new librarian in the NYC school system and found that I was happy with the use of filtering. The Board of Ed uses a filter known as Bess. However, it seems that there are so many sites that are blocked as a result. Anything to do with sports is blocked. As a result, the children can only use books to gather biographical info on any sports figure! It certainly puts a strain on my resources and it seems as though the students are lacking valid and up-to-date information.
