As I was going back through my email messages, I realized that I forgot
some of the ideas that people had sent me and I wanted to make sure that
I got ideas out to everyone, so here are some more wonderful ideas! :-)

Hi. I have 7 bulletin boards that I am responsible
for. One of the things I do is go to WalMart and buy
material to cover the boards with. At the WalMart now
is some material that the pattern (random) is
paperclips, push pull pins, and other school related
items. I put a very small hem in. I don't sew but I
can put in a rough hem in by hand. This is just for
washing. I also watch Home Depot and Lowe's for when
they put the wall paper on sale (usually 2 dollars for
a huge roll) which also makes for nice and different.
I have found that the kids realy pay attention to my
bulletin boards because the background is different
from the other teachers who just use the colored
paper. One bulletin contains a map of the United
States. This was also a piece of material that I just
got last week from WalMart. Last year I used a paper
map and it really didn't hold up well. It tore in
places from the kids touching it. I used different
themes with the map and I saw teachers using the map
as a teaching aid. I have some other stuff that I can
send along. My phone number is 281-646-0638 is you
want to call. bett

Maybe this is goofy (Actually, it IS goofy.) but what about just playing

with the word NEW. Make your heading "Look What's New," and put up the
cover
from a new book ("New Book"), the case from a new CD ROM ("New CD-ROM"),
and
all kinds of silly stuff like "New Pencil," "New York" (with a big
color
photo or poster), newt (with a toy plastic newt from a party store or a
photocopy from a book), "Fig Newton" (with a real one or an empty
package
tacked or glued to the board), etc. Then tuck photos of yourself and
your
new aide in among all the new stuff with your names.

Try some back issues of teacher's magazines, like Instructor also, see
if there is a teacher supply store in your neighborhood--they probably
have
books of bulletin bds. Good Luck.

You didn't indicate your grade level, but if your
students are old enough turn one board over to them.
This year I worked out an extra credit deal with the
7/8 language arts teachers. Students can get extra
credit for doing an author bulletin board for the
library. I set the parameters, require a preview
sketch. I set up a schedule and am pretty sure I'll
get somebody for each month.

Try to do something that doesn;t demand to be changed
on a strict schedule - or one that doesn't require the
entire display to change. I started out one year with
"Dog gone good reading". As Halloween approached I
put costumes on the dogs and changed to book jackets.
For Christmas I put Santa hats on them.

It takes time, but is worthwhile. Last year I started the year with a
huge
bulletin board of mounted mini-posters. I created the posters in
microsoft
word and they are just regular paper size with construction paper behind

them. I used all kinds of fonts, but put the first line of about
twenty-five novels on them. I scattered autumn leaves between.

Check out the Upstart and Demco Promotions catalogs. We use their ideas
all the time - without purchasing their materials.

I've done some bulletin boards in the past that involve the entire
staff. 1. Their diplomas "It's a matter of degree" 2.Favorite books
(childhood or now) 3. Baby pictures 4. Photo of each staff member
reading - one pictures was at the Great Wall of China 5. Pets
and their people 6. Staff hobbies 7. What animal would you be?

What about "Make New Friends but keep the old" scans/pics of books that
are
new along with pics of you and your aide. Use some silver and gold
colors
("some are silver and the others gold"). Could also pull books about new

kids. Don't know if this would work beyond elementary but maybe it will
springboard you

Lucky me, I have no bulletin boards! I do use a table for a
display/bboard type area.
How about something with "new in the library", put some new books/book
jackets and also a photo of yourself, with some personal information.

Hi, I'm also looking for ideas for whole school interest library-type
bulletin
boards. If you get a lot of responses I'd love to see a hit. A couple
ideas
I'm
thinking about: "Get Into Books and Out of This World" with stars, a
rocket
ship
and book jackets; "Reading Will Take You To High Places" with kites,
etc.;
"Books
Create Memories" and have children contribute a paper "quilt square"
with a
favorite book title and illustration, assemble into a large paper
"Memory
Quilt";
"Reach Out And Read" with paper hands, maybe with kids writing favorite
book

title on hand. I usually change my big hallway bulletin board monthly
and
try to
highlight different grade levels through the year, but it can become a
daunting
task. Thanks for passing on ideas you receive and have a great school
year!

You could do something like.. " New words to learn in the LMC" and post

words that you will be introducing such as "fiction", "non-fiction",
"biography", etc.

Every year at my school, we do a bulletin board of the new students,
teachers, staff or administration. We choose a
theme each year and put everyone's name up on the board. We have
previously tried to have the board up when
school begins but I think in this age of technology, it would be great
to
have it up with the names and catch each
person with a digital picture on the first day. That was faces are put
with names. In our school, this bulletin board is
in the hall but this could work in the library itself.

Themes I have used include things like:

Whooooo's New using owls

An Olympics theme using red, white and blue ribbon and gold poster board

medals all on a fabric red, white and blue
flag like background

Mooooving into a new year (We got cut cow note pads and used them as the

place for names) and we had cow
decorations, etc.
