Whe I taught 2nd grade (for 14 years) I couldn't have made it without some help grading papers. But I was concerned about feelings too. So I did this for homework, class assignments and drills, but not for the major tests. I gave each child a yellow crayon. When they finished their work and were satisfied with their answers they colored over the answers lightly with the yellow crayon. Then I could call out the answers and they could check their own paper...the crayon kept them from changing an answer and they got the benefit of seeing what they did right or wrong as we graded the papers. I took up the papers...scores were not announced. It worked great. Can't remember where I got the idea, but I am sure I wasn't smart enough to come up with it on my own! Jeanna Dennis, LMS C.F.
