To Mary and all of us:

In September I put together a packet of information on science fiction
for a high school science teacher who wanted to incorporate literature
circles/novel reading into his science classes.

Here's the information I sent him:

Web sites:
Science fiction and fantasy for children: an annotated bibliography
for educators
http://libnt1.lib.uoguelph.ca/SFBib/index.htm
Searchable database; each annotation includes a summary of the book
and appropriate age/grade levels

Recommended chidren's SF and fantasy, from Strange Horizons
http://www.mamohanraj.com/kidssf.html
Annotated, with age levels. Unfortunately, this page is blocked by
the district's internet filter (Websense). Access it from home if
necesary for the good information included.

Golden Duck awards for excellence in children's science fiction
literature (Australia)
http://www.goldenduck.org
Awards given annual for picture book, middle grades, and young adult
sf

Recommended science fiction for use as a classroom tool
http://www.sff.net/people/etchemendy/recommendedsf.htm
In three groups: picture books and early readers; for middle graders
and young teens; for high school and young adults. Lightly annotated.
A notated of caution from this page: "We encourage you to read books
on this list prior to assigning them or reading them aloud in class,
as many science fiction novels deal frankly with difficult and
controversial social issues."

Science Fiction stories with good science:
Teaching resources to accompany the textbook, Voyages
http://www.hbcollege.com/astro/fraknoi/stories/ch11.html
Ignore the text at the top of the page "password required" Scroll
down to the dropdown boxes for specific chapters or to the link to
"other science fiction stories with good science"
As an example of resources linked to a chapter: Teaching resources to
accompany Voyages, Chapter 11, Rings, moon and Pluto
http://www.hbcollege.com/astro/fraknoi/stories/ch11.html
Other science fiction stories with good science
http://www.hbcollege.com/astro/fraknoi/stories/other.html
Lightly annotated

Proving that oil and water mix: science and literature in the middle
school. Jim Brewbaker and Kerri Deal. The ALAN Review, Spring 2000.

Enjoy!

Cheers. Edith.

mind, =
but I realize I am buying for a school, not just for me! Help would
