Out of the blue I got a volunteer for three weeks, a teacher ed
student with a community service requirement. I set her to finding
the MARC records for my huge cataloging backlog. At first I handed
her a pile and said, "this is Picture" or "this is fiction". Then we
got into a large pile that was mixed, including nonfiction (I
attached the call numbers on sticky notes). Last week she came to me
with a hefty Walter Farley novel and said, shouldn't this have a
number on it? I was puzzled and asked her why she thought it should
have a number. Her reply? "It's so big and thick." !! I had a hard
time not breaking down in giggles.
