Reading comprehension is (too) often taught by providing lots of practice = reading and answering questions and discussing books. It's one of those = things that works fine for the people it works fine for, but for kids who = have trouble for any reason (reading level's a bit too high, they're very = literal-minded, etc.) that strategy usually does a good job of widening = the gap between the haves and the have nots of reading comprehension. =20 I really like Priscilla Vail's very recent book, _Reading Comprehension._ = With my college kiddos, a huge problem is their limited vocabulary (and = a tendency to think words only mean one thing). Ed Ellis has some = really good ideas on teaching vocab so it sticks - You could develop a = good professional development session based on his article at http://www.ld= online.org/ld_indepth/teaching_techniques/ellis_clarifying.html (You might want to look at that whole section of LD ONLine, starting = with=20 http://www.ldonline.org/ld_indepth/teaching_techniques/strategies.html#orga= nization -- the strategies target LD kiddos but are good across the board = and might give you some good ideas). =20 Pop me an e-mail and I can recommend specific books & materials ...=20 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
