TAR TECH: MAC import audio Adobe Premiere

I am teaching a Basic Video Production course this year using Adobe
Premiere 6.0. on MACs ( G3 and iMac) Here's the problem that is
frustrating both the class and me!  We have sound on the camera and have
set the settings to import both video and audio BUT after we get it into
the computer, we have only video....no audio.  Do any of you tech people
out there have any suggestions for solving this problem?   TIA
