Thank you to all who provided the following information and advice: I use Virex for macs Just received this today which may provide you with information. Pica, the distributor, is an Australian company but I am not sure about Virex. <Virex Virus Update 01 Dec 2001 has been released and contains protection against many more macro viruses. The update is available from the following URL and can also be obtained by clicking on the EUpdate button in the Virex 6.1 application: <http://www.pica.com.au/vupdate.html> Webimmune <http://www.webimmune.net> is currently a free web-based service for scanning individual files for any kind of virus. This is very useful if you receive an "odd" email attachment on your Mac. Virex 6.1 will let you know if it contains a Macintosh or cross-platform virus. However you can use Webimmune to scan the suspect file for other kinds of viruses that do not infect the Macintosh platform, eg W32/BadTrans@MM. You can create yourself a free account at Webimmune by supplying an email address and password on the Webimmune website.> ***************************************** We use Norton AntiVirus here in our office. Our hardware ranges from creaky old PowerMac G3s to I-Macs, I-Books, and the latest and greatest. I personally have had no problems with NAV on my G3, and no conflicts with my old Palm, and now my Visor Edge handheld. To simplify my life, I have NAV set to automatically update itself in the middle of the night, when I am not in the office. ***************************************** I have a Mac Powerbook (fairly new, 1 yr. Old) and run Norton Antivirus. I also have a Palm and have no problem with sync using this program. I like Norton because you can do live updates from their site for all new viruses. ***************************************** I use Frisk Software's F-PROT Anti-Virus program. (http://www.f-prot.com/f-prot/products/). It's available for Windows, DOS, and Linux, and their educational pricing is very reasonable. We've never had a problem; though in all fairness I should add that we also use a security package that prevents users from saving to the hard drive. They either have to bring in their own disks or borrow one of the ones we have available for temporary saving. I'm sure that policy has prevented a lot of problems. ***************************************** I have been using McAfee for several years now without any problems. I work on a PC. Since I use it on my home computer, it is scheduled to come on at 8 p.m. I usually go online just before 8, and it updates my protection automatically, at that time, if is it is needed. I get an e-mail reminder to update payment for service once a year. ***************************************** We have Virex (Network Associates: www.nai.com) on all our Macs. No conflicts and very easily updated. McAfee's Anti-virus an a PC would be similar.
