Hi, Thanks for the wonderful variety of responses for books that could be read aloud to sixth grade students to introduce them to the Great Depression. Here are the suggestions: The Babe and I Uncle Jed's Barbershop Nowhere to Call Home by Cynthia DeFelice Letter to Mrs. Roosevelt by C. Coco DeYoung The Velvet Room by Zilpha Keatley Snyder; Blue Willow by Gates Treasures in the Dust (don't remember author) The American Girl Series offers KIT with stories about the depression A Long Way From Chicago by Richard Peck Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis Out of the Dust, Karen Hesse- dust bowl Dave at Night Gail Carson Levine - focus is more on the Harlem Renaissance Mary Weyant suggests playing “Brother, Can you spare a Dime” also.
