Hi All, I received some additional responses to my inquiry after I posted the hit, but the bottom line is that I am still looking. Apparently being out of the country does make a difference. Are there any international librarians out there who work with a US based subscription service who could write me directly. We have subscriptions ending this month, so I need to make some decisions. I can't believe how useless EBSCO is here; it's the worst service I've ever had from anyone. Here is the original post and the new hits... *************************************************** HIT> Magazine Jobbers Original Post Hi Everyone, I have started looking at our magazine subscriptions for next year (a bit late, but...), and over the last three years, we have been pretty unhappy with Ebsco's service in Colombia (where my library is located). What magazine jobbers do you use, and how do you find their service (in terms of price, "lost issue" response, service, etc.)? And, as important, does your service deal with libraries outside the US? I'd like to hear from both Stateside as well as international libraries, as I think that being outside the country probably doesn't really make a difference to the jobber. I will post a hit when I get enough responses. Thanks in advance for your help. PS As a sidebar to this, if you have any "extra special" magazines you couldn't live without, please let me know. We are a K-12 school. PPS It's been a while since we've had this particular discussion, so I thought I'd update the thread. *********************************************** I use PTP magazine subcription services, number us 1-800-733-5470, they beat all of ebsoc's prices. *********************************************** Hi, We use Blacks Magazine Agency out of Indiana for our magazine subscriptions. They seem to do a good job. You can contact them at: Black Magazine Agency P.O. Box 1018 Logansport, Indiana 46947 800-782-9787 219-753-2429 Fax 219-753-5480 *********************************************** I have used Ebsco for 13 years. I have found them helpful and reliable. If we miss issues, they are quick to get them replaced. Don't know how well they compare as to price, because I don't want to change something that is working so well! *********************************************** I didn't reply because I have just placed my opening day order with a group in NY called Alini Magazine Services. I got the tip from the listserv actually, and I find them very helpful and responsive. I always get a person on the phone immediately, which I haven't heard of for years. I will let you know how they do once the order comes in next semester. Alini Magazine Services 1428 Garfield Rd. East Meadow, NY 11554 800-292-1231 ********************************************** We use a company out of Long Island called Alini. The service is good and the prices seem fair. I have only been in this job since August and had to hastily evaluate our periodical subscriptions. We are a K-5 school, so the needs are much different than k-12! Here are the favorites: The kids would riot if we dropped Cat Fancy or Dog Fancy. The teachers would riot if we dropped Reading Teacher (expensive) or Mailbag. BMX Plus Ranger Rick (I use this for my lessons) American Girl. Of course we get Zoobooks, National Geographic, etc., but those go without saying. If I was working in a high school I would definitely get World Press Review and Muse. ********************************************** I have used EBSCO ( they are high). For the last 10 years or so, I have used Subscription Service of America,2163 Jackson Place, Bellmore, NY 11710-1188, PH- 516.679.8241 or FAX 516. 221.5595. They have proven to be very reliable and extremely cost effective. ********************************************** You know I searched all of the flyers I have from them and they don't list one. So I went to good old "Metacrawler" and searched. (You can imagine the hits I got for Black Magazine Agency!) I found it at www.blackmagazine.ohgolly.com but it doesnt seem to tell you a whole lot. ********************************************** We use Subscription Services of America but I am not thrilled with them. ********************************************** A few years ago our high school library switched from DEMCO to ALINI. We were lukewarm about DEMCO, and received info on ALINI. After a couple years we gave them a chance, as they worked hard to give very competitive prices. I'm satisfied with their service. Sorry I don't have a phone number of email address. I'm responding from home. Maybe a google search will find them. (I think they're in New York) *************************************************** Thomas David Rompf Head of Information Services Colegio Bolivar Apartado Aereo 26300 Cali, Valle, Colombia South America Home: +57-2-330-2381 Work: +57-2-555-2039 Fax: +57-2-555-2041 / USFax (810) 277-0487 Cell: +57-3-560-0064 Email: tom@rompf.org / trompf@colegiobolivar.edu.co / tomrompf@hotmail.com Colegio Bolivar Library Web Page: http//www.rompf.org or http://www.uniweb.net.co/bolivar/library Colegio Bolivar School Page: http://www.colegiobolivar.edu.co *************************************************** =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
