Hi,

Thank you all so much for the suggestions. I was able to give my
student at least two books for her winter break. Here are all the
suggestions:

--------------
Iceman by Chris Lynch and The Killer's Cousin by Nancy Werlin
----------------
Nancy Werlin, The Killer's Cousin
M.E. Kerr, What Became of Her
-----, Deliver Us From Evie
Lois Duncan, I Know What You Did Last Summer
Cynthia Voigt, When She Hollers
Fran Arrick, What You Don't Know Can Kill You
Caroline B. Cooney, Whatever Happened to Janie
-------------------------
Don't You Dare Read This, Mrs. Dunphrey by Haddix

Where the Heart Is by Billie Letts (not exactly a dysfunctional family
but a gal who's out on her own)

Harris and Me by Gary Paulsen
---------------------------------

They're not really similar, but I think on the same theme are"Sybil" and
"Lovey," stories about kids who had a really hard childhood. Sybil is
the multiple personality disorders woman; Lovey is about an abused
child.
I read them around the same time I was fascinated by VC Andrews, so they
might fly.
----------------------------

I just loved Werlin's The Killer's Cousin--it's a great story and not at
all
controversial.

Imagine! a great story with only one cuss word!

The main character is aquitted of murder and sent to live with relatives
in
Boston. Is his little cousin the Killer's Cousin, or is he the killer's
cousin?=20

I couldn't put the book down (and I love VC ANdrews and all of those
types
of books)
