I can't believe I didn't think of Jack and the Beanstalk with the magic harp! Thanks for everyone's quick help! Also mentioned were The Grey King by Susan Cooper, The Truthful Harp by Lloyd Alexander or his series Prydain, angel books, Christmas books with great illustrations, a good encyclopedia, A String in the Harp by Nancy Bond (about ancient Wales and the famous bard Taliesin and a young boy who travels from today to then), The Names Upon the Harp (a collection of Irish folk tales), or mythology books. I really appreciate it (as does the teacher!)
