One of my favorite non-fiction books is now back in print. The South Dakota State Historical Society Press has announced a new edition of John E. Miller's "Looking for History on Highway 14." This book was the winner of a Literary Contribution Award from the Mountain Plains Library Association. The book goes across the state of South Dakota on Highway 14. Each chapter focuses on one of the small towns along this highway and concentrates on one aspect of small town life, from the Memorial Day service to the general store. It includes history and what is happening to these small towns today. It's definitely written for adults, but could be a valuable reference for "what was everyday life like" type projects. One of the towns listed is De Smet, SD one of the hometowns of Laura Ingalls Wilder of the "Little House" books. Miller also wrote the best biography of Wilder to date called "Becoming Laura Ingalls Wilder," it is also an adult book, but points out many of the inaccuracies common in the children's biographies available of Wilder. In case you can't get it through your regular jobber, it is available for $17.95 plus shipping and handling from South Dakota State Historical Society Press, 900 Governors Drive, Pierre SD 57501-2217; telephone (605) 773-6009. I don't have any stake in the sales of this book, except I hope Miller keeps writing. ;-) Sarah S.
