I am looking for effective summer literacy programs as a pattern for our efforts to encourage summer reading for our students. Our elementary school is over half English as a second langugage as well as free and reduced lunch. We have over 1,300 students, and we need a way to encourage our students to read over the summer. Our teachers work so hard and give them great literacy skills, but we know they do not read over the summer, putting them months behind their peers when they get to middle school. Many of them do not have transportation to the public library. I would like to put together some kind of program for bringing books to the students.. or getting the students to the books! I would like to know of a similar program that works!
