GEN: ESEA and School Libraries $ Funding Passes (U.S. Interest)

Dear LM_NET,

Here is something for the U.S. members:

The Senate just passed the "NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT OF 2001", which you
probably know includes special funding for school libraries. President
Bush is expected to sign.

Here is one part that caught my attention:

"(4) Improving literacy through school libraries.--For the purpose of
carrying out subpart 4 of part B, there are authorized to be appropriated
$250,000,000 for fiscal year 2002 and such sums as may be necessary for
each of the 5 succeeding fiscal years."

and another:

"(i) Supplement, Not Supplant.--Funds made available under this section
shall be used to supplement, and not supplant, other Federal, State, and
local funds expended to carry out activities relating to library,
technology, or professional development activities."
