Re: ESEA Thanks

Joni -

I agree that there are some disturbing parts of the bill (more mandatory
testing , publicizing of test scores, parent choice to remove kids from
non-performing public schools, etc.). However the ESEA appropriation can
be a boon to our schools.

When I first began working in schools (1972), we received an annual
stipend of approximately $5000 for books. This was in the days when you
could buy a book for $5 or $6. I left the profession to raise my family.
When I returned in the 1980s the money had dried up and the books on our
shelves had been bought primarily with ESEA money from the 60s and 70s.
It is no wonder that many of us had books about the Moon that told us
how "some day man will reach the Moon" and books about the South that
told of the "happy life' of the slaves on plantations.

I will vigorously track down those funds in my state and get my district
people to apply for the grants because my collection can use the
overhaul.
