Dear LM_Netters,

I am in serious need of help. I just got a part-time, temporary job at
a private school. My job is to weed out the garbage, then order new books
for the collection. Sounds easy, right?
All the books are from the 1960's. They have thick coats of dust, and
are on high school level. The new library is supposed to be geared for k-12.
There is $10,000 raised by the PTA for new books (over several years).
The principal boasts that he can stretch his dollars and not let me
throw out any books that might be readable. "Books cost money" he says.
For example, he went through the boxes of discarded books (on my second
day on the job), found a book on Pres. Nixon's Inauguration speeches, and
yelled at me. However, most of the books have not been used in the last
thirty years. Furthermore, he told me to keep all the science experiment
books from 1950's to the 1960's, even though they require spoonfuls of
mercury? I am ready to quit. If I don't weed more books, there will not be
room for new ones. The PTA wants the library, since they are funding it.
They are also funding my salary. What should I do?

Sincerely,
Liba Geltzer.
