I second the gentleman's words of wisdom: quit.

If this was a 'regular full time' position, then maybe... but you don't need
this - and it can serve you no purpose. If you fight and win - it's a bad
recommendation b/c you are disagreeable. If you give in - anyone who knows
the library will think you did a lousy job. You can't win.

However, I wouldn't go down without any fight. I, personally, would write
the principle and PTA stating that with great regreat you are resigning b/c
your professional standards and ethics do not allow you to keep books that,
for example, require children to use mercury. You would LOVE to do the job
if you were allowed to use your professional expertise, but since that is
not the case, you cannot continue.

Good luck.

Subject: Weeding

Dear LM_Netters,

I am in serious need of help. I just got a part-time, temporary job
at
a private school. My job is to weed out the garbage, then order new
books
for the collection. Sounds easy, right?
All the books are from the 1960's. They have thick coats of dust,
and
are on high school level. The new library is supposed to be geared for
k-12.
There is $10,000 raised by the PTA for new books (over several
years).
The principal boasts that he can stretch his dollars and not let me
throw out any books that might be readable. "Books cost money" he says.
For example, he went through the boxes of discarded books (on my
second
day on the job), found a book on Pres. Nixon's Inauguration speeches,
and
yelled at me. However, most of the books have not been used in the last
thirty years. Furthermore, he told me to keep all the science experiment
books from 1950's to the 1960's, even though they require spoonfuls of
mercury? I am ready to quit. If I don't weed more books, there will not
be
room for new ones. The PTA wants the library, since they are funding it.
They are also funding my salary. What should I do?

Sincerely,
Liba Geltzer.
