Here's a summary of responses to my posting about information literacy/research skills questions on tests: From Iowa: This was one of the forms used in grades 6, 7 & 8 I don't recall which form of the test I examined. 1 question on searching library catalog. It is not referred to as a card catalog or a computer catalog (no diagram either). 5 questions on using an index 5 questions on periodical index 3 on notes for paper 7 on keywords 6 on dictionary 6 on choosing sources almanac, atlas, encyclopedia, etc. 2 on writing a paper 1 on Thesaurus I did exam levels 12, 13, & 14 and none of them used the word card catalog or showed an illustration of a card catalog. It was referred to as library catalog in one question at each level. It was actually the same question at every level. 7 questions on keyword would be the biggest change I noted. I did not have a chance to examine the ITEDS this year at the levels of ITBS under sixth grade or the HS ITEDS. - - - - - - - - - - - - - Another response from Iowa: The Iowa Basic Skills test has been revised with this year's edition. As I understand it the questions over the card catalog have been removed. - - - - - - - - - - - - - From Montana: I noticed last year that the Iowa Basics did not have card catalog questions, per se. They did have key word terms and analysis of the best sources for information, etc. - - - - - - - - - - - - - From Nebraska: The elementary version has changed for the better. The emphasis is on keyword searching! A great improvement. - -- - -- - -- - -- - -- - -- - -- - -- - -- - -- - -- Edith LaForge voice: 918.746.9448 Library Information Specialist Hamilton Middle School Library Tulsa Public Schools 2316 North Norwood Place Tulsa, Oklahoma 74115 email: lafored@tulsaschools.org home page: http://www.tulsaschools.org/hamilton/ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
