The size of an image depends a lot on how it was created. Either gifs or jpegs can be small or large. Yes, it matters how big the image is when adding it to a web page - large images can make the loading time much longer, and even crash older browsers. I would suggest checking the file size of the images you want to put on your site and make sure that they're not too big.
