I am reposting a request following a suggestion by one of you. Thanks to those that have responded already. Help please. The noted speaker and writer, Jamie McKenzie, has described the decline of the library media center and services to students and staff, as administrators look for ways to provide more money for technology and other school costs. Our library media center and my role as library media specialist may be destined to become one of the statistics he speaks of as our superintendent and his administrative team seek to cover a proposed $250,000 deficit, brought on by high fuel costs, lack of a community tax base for a referendum (just finished constructing a new building), former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson’s QEO requirements, and other miscellaneous decisions over time. Many proposed cuts are listed and yes, one of them is “lay-off a librarian”. I would appreciate your support as I attempt to alter the view of a high school principal, who does not value a library media program, a retiring middle school principal who is designing the rubric to validate their budgetary decisions, and the superintendent, Bruce Anderson, who will submit their proposal to the board once the recommendations are solidified. I have researched ERIC and other sources, articles from Jamie McKenzie and others, and my own professional organization, in order to make some sort of educated organized rebuttal to the proposal. I don’t know if their views can be altered, but I must make an attempt. I would appreciate your support and responses to this. If you can help, please take a few moments to email your thoughts to them. Thanks so much.
