GEN: taking on a newspaper club?

Hi, all:

Should I try to take on a newspaper club?  At the beginning of the year, my
principal encouraged me to do something related to helping with the writing
skills.  I suggested this but the project has been dead in the water due to
my lack of experience at publishing.  Ideally, I'd like to do it 'zine style
and print it out from there.  Is anyone else out there doing such a thing?
Any recommendations on where I might get more info, esp. on desktop
publishing and/or webpage design?
