Too much "break" time

Several times when I have tried to talk with my principal about my schedule,
he has indicated that I have an excessive amount of "break" time when I
don't have classes.  He has come to this conclusion by observing substitutes
watching television or talking with other staff members when I am out.  Even
though I try to tell him that I never take a break because my off periods
are for collection development, shelving, etc., I can't seem to get through.
Any comments on this would be appreciated when I discuss next year's
schedule with him.  I am at a K-8 school where I see 12 elementary classes
for 45 minutes a week and 9 middle school classes for 50 minutes every other
week.
