I am currently working in a middle school that is populated with low readers. We have done much at our school to try and improve this but every year our test scores go down. My principal has jumped on the band wagon and wants the students to do everything from Accelerated Reader to Battle of the Books (an event that the public library and schools put together that requires participating students to read over 30 books. They are then tested on the books). This is also encouraged from his higher-ups. I personally am against this competitive reading, but have not been able to approach him with alternatives. I would love to hear what other media specialists are doing. Thank you.
