Poem about the Donner Party

I was talking to my cousin the other day about the Donner Party, and I asked
if he had read that wonderful long epic poem about their journey. Then,
after I got him all interested, I couldn't remember the name of it or the
author! I know one of you will know. I think the author's first name may be
Carl and the poem appeared in The New Yorker in the early 70s.
