I think I've found it. The poem is probably The Donner Party by  George
Keithley. Keithley is evidently a professor emeritus at Chico State in CA. I
can find single volume copies of the poem (including a first edition offered
at $15), but haven't yet found the reference to the magazine issue in which
it was published. Original pub date was 1972, which makes this just about
certain to be the right one. If you want to purchase the poem, you should be
able to get it through amazon.com or some of the other vendors on the net.
