Is this the series called _History of US_ by Joy Hakim (US = United States)?
If this is the one you're thinking of, my school doesn't have it, but I know
the public library does.

It is an historical overview (10 volumes) of the United States, and it seems
to be well-used in the areas which are studied in the schools (Native
Americans, Colonial America & Civil War). Volumes that aren't as focused on
in the curriculum (World War I, Reconstruction, etc.), aren't used as
heavily, but still go out a couple of times a year. (I checked circulation
stats with the public librarian) The newer edition is 1999.
