Jayne and LM_Net colleagues:
One decimal place in Dewey for Elementary is completely sufficient. I wrestled
with this decision eight years ago. I switched all to one decimal place in my
elementary school, and things just got better. Kids could find things, and kids
could use the on-line catalog better. Unless you have a HUGE collection, you can
find things better with fewer decimal places lapping around the edges of books.
When I moved to my present high school, I started truncating them to two decimal
places. Our primary, elementary, and jr. high have decided to go with just one
decimal place. Mr. Dewey has not risen from his resting place to haunt us.
Vendors, I've discovered, have specifications that accommodate this change. If
you don't see it on the spec sheet, just call, and ask. They'll lop off those extra
digits for you during processing. If they don't, just get out the correction fluid.
