Several of you asked for replies about my question on Public Law 106-554, regarding the mandating of filters. Apparently there is not too much excitement about it out there. I am planning to just sit back and wait. I received only three replies and here they are: So far every law requiring filtering has been found unconstitutional. I suggest that this is a good time to have a wait and see attitude. Certainly, the ACLU, ALA, and others will file suit against this version of the law as well. I too am parochial high school. I resisted filters--and still do. However, unknown to me the business office and I am assuming the president of the school OK'd it and they installed Sonic Wall. It's Ok. I at least appreciate that they block by site not subject. We have had some problems in our class on racism and hate with the teacher wanting to take students to see various hate sites and it won't let him in. Solution was a lap top that is not on the network. There is so much garbage out there--it just amazes me how much of that stuff appears in my e-mails everyday. So in someways if you have younger kids I could see that there could be some advantages. Even my big kids still stumble on sites that I and they don't really appreciate--even with the filter on. I'm working on a news story for SLJ about the passage of the "Children's Internet Protection Act." Although I've seen no comments returned to you on LM_NET, I'm assuming some people have told you how scary this legislation is. The ACLU is planning to file suit to stop it before it takes effect on April 20, but this suit will probably concentrate on the effect in public libraries rather than school media centers, because the measure forces public libraries to filter terminals adults will use (I interviewed an ACLU attorney yesterday).
