Gen: Heraldry/Renaissance

Hello, LM_Netters,
A teacher in my school is preparing a unit on the Renaissance  period and has
the following question:  What is the correct terminology for the
embossed/enlarged/ornate first letter at the beginning of each chapter in
some of the books that deal with Renaissance times?  I don't even know if
there is a specific term for that ornate letter, but I told him I'd ask you
all!  Thanks so much for your help!
