A HUGE thank you to all of you who sent me info on your budgets. The info I
received indicated to me that my district is seriously falling behind in
library budgets. Some schools get a bit more than I do, some of you have
staggering budgets that are beyond my wildest dreams! I have removed names
and grouped the information by state or province. And if there are any
other Canadian teacher-librarians out there, especially in provinces other
than BC, I would still love to hear from you. That goes for Australian
teacher-librarians too!

TENNESSEE
We get $6.60 per
student for books, $2.25 for AV, and a flat $1500 periodical budget (at the
HS level - MS and elementary are lower for periodicals). We have recently
requested a boost in our AV budget as well, but haven't been through the
budget process yet for next year

MINNESOTA
we are at $8.36 per student.

MISSOURI
I'm in a 7-12 school with about 350 students. My budget for this year is
$17,900. $9,700 of that is local funds, and the rest is state and federal
grant money.

VIRGINIA
Our current
allotment is $15.00 per student. In addition, all schools that are five
years or older receive a book replacement budget that is based on annual
replacement of 3% of that site's total collection. The replacement
budget is figured at $18.00 per book x 3% of the site collection.

$22.00/ students for books, magazines and library software
Separate budget for supplies
Separate budget for maps and golbes
Separate budget for AV hardware
Separate budget for computer hardware and software

NEW JERSEY
I am really blessed with a generous budget. For a High School of about 1200
students, I have an annual budget of about $60,000.00, which translates to
$50.00 per student.

GEORGIA
In the state of Georgia we are given $19.51 FTE (full-time enrolled)
student. It is mandated by state law that these funds can ONLY be spent on
circulating library materials - not paper, pencils, printer cartridges,
equipment, or anything other than books, periodicals, A/V, software, and
other items in circulation.

BRITISH COLUMBIA
Sounds like an interesting bit of research you're doing. At the
beginning of the year our local TL's calculated that schools got
approximately $13 per student (if I remember correctly). I will try and
get the actual number. I remember everyone being rather surprised
because elementary numbers seemed higher than secondary (not
significantly however).

The average / student budget is
$16.00 / student. I get $20.00, but we only have 184 students.

(Name of district) has funded school libraries at $15/student for
many years.

ALABAMA
We receive $135/teacher unit. That means with
82 teachers we receive $11,070. This is used for books, av, supplies,
periodicals, equipment etc.

LOCATION UNKNOWN
Our budget is $30 per student plus an additional $10 per student that is
released in February after most budget surprises are over.

WASHINGTON
Our district gives each
building a lump sum to budget with. Each site determines how much of that
lump sum goes to the library program. Some libraries are well funded,
some get nothing.
