I have a signed copy of this book, and will quote what is written inside
the jacket below. I am honored to be a personal friend of this author, and
my children, 6,9 and 15 enjoyed this book immensely.
When Sue Beckhorn visited our school, she had alot of eager fans ready to
read this book! I quote from the jacket of the book:
-----
"In the morning of the world, there were no red foxes...."When the mountains
and frests were young, and only the stars were old, all cats had long
tails...." How did the porcupines get prickles? Why do skunks make such an
awful smell? It's in our human nature to ponder such things, especially
when we are young and have time to focus on these important questions.
Then, as years go by, it becomes all too easy to stop observing the world
with such an open mind.
Here are six beautifully imagined stories from a grown-up explorer of
woodlands who still delights in pondering the "why" of things and sharing
her own imaginative answers. Susan Beckhorn's tales are a pleasure in
themselves and an inspiration for readers of all ages to start composing
their own "just so" stories honoring the animals of their home ground,
whether that be prairie, back yard, farmland, forest, or city park. "
AND... on the back cover of jacket:
About the Author: When Cricket magazine published
"Why Raccoon Has a Black Mask and a Ringed Tail' and a little boy wrote to
say it was his favorite story, I was encouraged to write others. The next
thing I knew, I had a book," recalls Susan Beckhorn.
"I was the youngest in a family that loves children, animals, and the
outdoors. Now my husband, Fred, and I have two kids, six horses, two dogs,
three cats, a rabbit, a hedgehog, and a chinchilla living at our house. "I
was a shy kids with a hot temper. I lived for barefoot summers at 'the
lake'--and I lived for books. I read during walks to school, under my desk
in math class, in the bathroom as I brushed my teeth, and, of course,
beneath the covers.
Today, Susan writes and paints in the stone house that she and Fred built
themselves in western New York state. She also enjoys walking, horseback
riding, camping, and playing guitar for music nights with friends.
